You may not know this, but Riverside, Iowa is the future birthplace of fictional character Captain James T. Kirk from Star Trek.
For a great summary of how this came about, go to this website.
This past June, my youngest son and I decided to ride to Riverside and see what all the hype was about. Here is the route we took:
Riverside is actually fairly close to the Quad Cities. Just a short trip down along the Mississippi to Muscatine, and then straight West to Riverside.
Riverside embraces their “role” in Star Trek lore and holds an annual Star Trek festival. Here is one of their welcome signs:
Outside of the Star Trek museum is this permanent parade float:
In the center of town we found the actual “Future” birthplace of Capt. Kirk.
The “future birthplace” sign is actually behind this hair salon.
Just down the street from the future birthplace is the bar where legend has it, James T. Kirk was conceived.
All of the street light poles had Star Trek banners:
On the way back home, we saw this guy trying to cross the road.
This was a fun day trip and a good way to spend some time with my son. We aren’t huge Trek fans or anything, but it is fun to see how the small town of Riverside, IA has embraced this bit of lore as their own and really run with the idea.
