It’s not very often that January in Iowa gives the opportunity to take a motorcycle ride. But, when Dale and I saw the forecast for Saturday, January 21st said 53 degrees and sunny we started planning to get the bike out and take a short ride. We waited for a heavy morning fog to burn off and the roads to dry a bit, and left shortly after lunch. The problem? As we were getting on the bike, it was indeed sunny and 53 degrees. By the time we had gone about 1/2 a mile, it was cloudy and turning colder. Very quickly the temperature dropped 10 degrees and the sun left us for good. I soon realized I wasn’t dressed quite warm enough. I have an open faced helmet while Dale’s is closed. I also didn’t have the liners in my pants because a few extra winter pounds have made them a bit snug. But my biggest mistake was thin gloves. Very quickly I felt the cold creeping in. Now I know a lot of people ride in colder temps, but I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to the cold. It seems to sink into my bones! So, we made it a short ride down along the river and through a great park. An hour later we are back home. I am sipping a nice hot cup of coffee and trying to warm back up. Yes, it was wonderful to be on the bike and great to say we could ride in January, but for now I am going to go sit in front of the fire that Dale just built and dream of summer rides…when I complain that I am too hot!
